Bits of Steak “Writing That Sizzles” Competition, Day 01

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

Alright writing fans, for the rest of September (at least 2x/wk) we will be posting a series of word scraps (aka prompts), Bits of Steak if you will, each taken from Randall McNair’s beer stained journals there at the Swinging Door Saloon. They each started out as promising poems but were lost in the haze of too much whiskey and beer.

Your job, should you accept it, is to take them and turn them into sizzling, full course meals. Take a word/line/stanza and make it a poem; take the whole thing and write a short story; or, just take the sentiment and build a literary masterpiece.

Email your entries to submissions@bitsofsteak.com. We will be picking a daily winner on October 1st, and choosing from them the winner of the first Bits of Steak Sizzling Writing Competition. First prize wins $100 and publication to our blog/social media. So, get to crackin’!

Here’s the 1st prompt:

I

I hit the fungo stick hard

and the shortstop back pedals.

I should ease up; he is only ten.

But I am trying to teach him something

and back pedaling

is not it.

*Note: Your entry includes a free subscription to McNairPoet.com/blog. You may cancel at any time. Submission deadline: 11:59pm September 30, 2020. Enter as often as you like, but only once per prompt.

Also, I am now giving away $50 on top of the $100 awarded by my publisher. With 3 different ways to enter, winning has never been easier. Just click below and choose the option(s) you’re most comfortable with. Good luck! 🍀
